Color Wheel-Monochrome Green Butterflies

I have been looking at the color wheel (see info at the end of this post).  There are 6 different combos on the color wheel that I want to try.  Today is the first combo and I am using the Monochrome Combo.  It fit well with the next challenge for Alphabet Challenge Blog.

The next alphabet is the letter "G" and at Alphabet Challenge Blog, they are calling for the color green so I submitted this card...

The sequins are sea-green so I think that is why it picked up a blue shimmer but they are actually green so I used a flash on the card to show it.
The 2 small butterflies are painted with LuminArte Green Tea Twinkling H2O's and has such a pretty green shimmer to it.

The top butterfly has 3 layers.  The second layer is vellum colored with Copic G24 green.  The top layer is vellum colored with the same LuminArte Green Tea Twinkling H2O's.

Behind the Memory Box Butterfly Spectacle die cut of butterflies and opening is a piece a green cardstock I had for years.  It has flowers and butterflies all over it.  It was perfect for the window area of the die cut when I popped it up with pop dots.

I am submitted this to G for green at Alphabet Challenge

 Now, about that Color Wheel...

I have had an EK Success Rainbow Color Wheel for YEARS and never really used it.

I decided to do a bit of research and find out..how do you really use it?  I am never really sure when I pick my colors.  What really goes well together?  Apparently, using a color wheel, will help me to quickly pick out colors and options depending on what is my end goal!  The color wheel has a middle that spins around and you can move the arrows around to choose your colors. It will also have arrows to help with the different combinations.  Depending if you are going for a single color or up to 4.

  • Monochrome Combos is a variation of a color that you like and the shades would be clustered together on the color wheel.  For example: dark blue, slightly lighter blue, and light blue.  This is a great choice if you want your card to be identified with a particular color.
  • Complementary Combos would be colors that are directly across from one another on the color wheel.  This wheel has a black arrow. This would work if you want a high contrast like yellow and purple or teal and red .  You can also mix up the shades like a teal with pink (shade of red).
  • Analogous Combos are colors that sit directly side by side on the color wheel like violet, blue and teal.  All three of the colors sit next to each other on the color wheel.  You can use 2, 3,or 4 if you want.
  • Split Complement Combos would be one color on the wheel but do not use the color directly across. Instead you would use the color to the left and the color to the right of the complementary color.  So if you chose yellow, directly across is purple but use the two colors to the right and left of the purple which would be blue-purple (to the right of purple and red-purple (which is to the left of purple).  This color wheel shows an orange triangle with two even sides and one short side.
  • Triad Color Combos is a variant of the Split Complementary colors.  This one uses colors that are found equally spaced on the color wheel.  You pick a main color and the other two would be accent colors.  Remember you can use any of the shades of a colors to tone down any of the colors if you don't want to use a bright bold color.  An example of Triad color would be purple, green and orange or red, yellow and blue. It shows on the color wheel as a red triangle with three even sides.
  • Another variation is Tetrad Combos.  Same as Triad but uses four colors and shows on my color wheel as green rectangle for a Rectangular Tetrad or a purple square for a Square Tetrad.

An Early Teacher Appreciation Day!

I have two great Daughter-in-Laws and both are teachers.  I wanted to make them a special card for Teachers Appreciation Day on May 3rd.
This image was a free image from a FaceBook group called The East Wind.  Sign up for the Newsletter and you can get a free digital image each month as well!

After coloring this image with my Twin Touch Markers, I colored the tree, sky and grass with Twinkling H2O's to give it a nice subtle twinkle.  Using a brush dipped into thicker twinkling H2O's and used part of the bristles I was able to make the grass stalks.  I love the quote that I found on a t-shirt that said "Teacher by day World's best mom at night".  I printed it out on vellum, placing one part wrapped around the front and the rest inside of the card.

One down and one more to go!

Outlawz Progressive Challenge

Happy New Year!!!

Today I made my 1st card for 2016.  It does not have anything inside.  Keeping it as a "just in case I need something quick" card.

I decided to join the Outlawz Progressive Challenge.   Every month you get a free image emailed to you and due by the last day of the month.   This month the beautiful Cabbage Roses image came from Sandi Huggett at Sandi's Samples.
I used Derwent Inktense Pencils to color the image and highlight the edge.  After I was all done, I colored over it with Twinkling H2O's Gold and the background was colored with Twinkling H2O's Sage.  The Spellbinders butterfly adorned the card front and the background was cut using Top Dog Die Modern Mosaic.  The twine was something I had for years and was happy I had the right matching colors.

Here is a close-ups of the shimmering image and background.

I am also going to submit this to the Scrabooks-r-us group challenge # 85 Very Girly Creations.

Thank you for stopping by!

It's A One Flap Of a Card

I had fun making todays card for a co-worker.  She gave me a stamp set from Stampingbella and it is called Wiz.   She was showing me some stamps she bought and Wiz was one of them.  I mentioned how I adored him.  When she got her order in, she gave him to me as a gift.  I wanted to thank her by using Wiz.

I found a fold I wanted to try called One Flap Fold.  I had to design my own dimensions to fit the Wiz but it was easy enough to do to make this fit an A2 size envelope.  After stamping him with Memento Tuxedo Black, I painted him with Twinkling H20's to give his entire image a shimmer.  It is hard to take a picture of the real shimmer.  At first I left the background white but it was too bright.  I used Shimmerz which is another shimmery paint to make a swirling background like dusk setting.  The crystal ball has crystal effects to give it that glassy look.
*side note: did you know if your Shimmerz dried up you can just use small amount of distilled water and your paint is good as new?*

The bottom background was fun to do.  I wanted the look of stars because to me Wiz reminds me of having a cosmic energy.  I took a larger piece of black cardstock and lightly sprayed bleach on it.  The black turned like a purplish grey color where the bleach removed the color.

I used a Q-tip to rub blue, pink and yellow chalk into the bleached areas to form planets.  I also swirled some color across the black cardstock to make comets etc.  The last part was made from a toothbrush and watered down white paint.  To make the splatters like stars, dip the toothbrush bristles in the paint and using your finger fan it across the bristles over the paper and it will spray little tiny globs.  Good idea to protect your area and to wear disposable gloves unless you don't mind fingers full of paint!  After it was dry, I sprayed it lightly with hairspray so that the chalk would not rub off and cut it down to size.

I cut three sets of Sizzix thinlits words and glued them on top of each other to make the words thicker.  Top layer of the words was cut from a heavy shimmery cardstock. I wanted to raise the thank you up high enough to give the image a place to rest against to keep it in the up position.  The image lifts up and lays flat for mailing.

I hope she enjoys it.   Thank you for stopping by!

Swallowtail & H2O's Background

I wanted to show you a card I made using the background paper from the post Mulberry Meets H2O's.  This time I used the white cardstock that was made into an H2O background paper.  The Swallowtail was stamped on the cardstock with black ink and then colored with more H2O's.
I like the hint of color that surrounded the butterfly.  After I was done, I outlined the butterfly with a lighter blue marker.

I still have left over from both the mulberry and the cardstock.  I am going to put them aside for now to use another day.

Have a wonderful crafty day and thank you for stopping by!

Mulberry Meets H2O's

I am so happy Twinkling H2O's made their way back into the crafting world.  I was devastated when they announced the company was closing down long ago.  I love them, especially on Christmas cards. The other day I made two backgrounds using the H2O's on two different types of paper.  It is almost time to make the Mothers N Others invitation so I use the time prior to experiment and see what I will do. (More on that in the future)  I laid both backgrounds next to each other so you could see the difference.  The top sheet is white cardstock and the bottom is white mulberry. Both are 8 1/2 x 11.

To make the backgrounds I chose 4 H2O's colors (gold yellow, white shimmer, purple, blue).  I spritz water into them and let them set to get soft.  Meanwhile, I laid a piece of white mulberry onto a piece of white cardstock and wet it down really well using a spray bottle.

I started painting all over the mulberry with different colors, spritzing with water every now and then, especially if the color was too dark.  I did not want strong colors so the water tones the H2O's down a bit.  After I was done painting...I left the mulberry on the cardstock and set it off to the side for a bit to let the color seep onto the white cardstock.  After 10 minutes I removed the mulberry and let the both pieces dry completely on their own.
You can see the shimmer from the H2O's!

I made two cards using small pieces of the mulberry paper.  It dried stiffer than it normally is which is perfect for glueing down onto cardstock and stamping on it.   I still have enough of the mulberry to make at least two more cards and the full piece of the cardstock.  All total it took me about 10 minutes to make the backgrounds.  Although I loved how the backgrounds came out (especially the mulberry paper), I doubt I will use this technique to make the Mothers N Other invites as I need about 30 cards.  Back to the drawing board!!

See you soon....

Outhouse Wedding

I agree....a strange title for a strange card!!
When I bought this stamp "His n Hers" ...the first thing I thought of was an Anniversary or Wedding card. It could be the backwoods living I did for most of my life lol.
Our neighbors announced they suddenly got married on a Tues (decision made that day!!) so I knew they were the perfect couple to get my humorous card. I stamped this image on white cardstock and colored it in with Twinkling H2O's. I had a hard time to get a good photo but the "Hers" Outhouse is colored in white and "His" is colored in light blue. I outlined the entire image with a very light blue marker. The bow is made from wire ribbon and easy manipulated to a puff ball and then glued down on a black/white dotted chipboard. Sometimes you just have to make easy cards! Thank you for stopping by!

Mystery Image-Elmo

A yahoo group I belong to has a Mystery Monthly Challenge and this months image is Elmo. I thought he was going to be difficult to create with as I normally do not use these types of images. I am broadening my horizons! He was fun to color. I used Twinkling H2O's to color him and the blue background. The confetti was left over stickers that I had from long long ago. It felt good to "use it up"!. The background was stamped with an Outline Stamp. I am sure I will have to eventually send a young person a birthday card!

Twinkling H2O Halo

I see so many cards with images that have a hint of blue or yellow around them. No matter what I try, nothing seems to work easy for me. I decided to try my Twinkling H2O and chose the color Blue Ice. I spritzed a lot of water to mute the color a little more then usual and left it alone for 30 seconds. Once it softened up a bit, I used a dry brush and painted along the image. It gave the image a bit of shiny halo around it. I used my cuttlebug to emboss with A2 paisley folder. The ribbon gave it an interesting twist in the ripped corner. In case some of you do not know what a Twinkling H2O is....I describe it as a paste version of Shimmerz. To get the shimmery results, it requires an extra step and that is to soften it up, but I like the results. You can spritz water into it and paint with it directly onto your image or you can paint right on your rubber stamp and stamp your image.
